Romania's collaboration with CERN
Brief history:
- 1991 - the first Agreement was signed, assuring the necessary framework for the participation of Romanian research and industry in CERN programs
- 2001 - the Minister of External Affairs and the Minister of Education and Research visited CERN
- 2002 - the Agreement of cooperation (in force today) was signed between the Government of Romania and CERN referring to the future development of scientific and technical cooperation within the research projects of CERN
- 2003 - the President of Romania visited CERN
- 2004 - the establishment of the National committee Romania – CERN in 2004, the institution which coordinates the development of collaboration between Romanian research institutions and CERN
- 2006 – the Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration in the deployment and exploitation of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid was signed; Romania participates with a Tier 2 center in the organization's project in the field of GRID networks with scientific applications
Over 70 Romanian physicists and engineers work on CERN projects. The National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering Horia Hulubei officially participates in three LHC experiments (ATLAS, ALICE and LHC-b), in the construction of detectors and preparation of data analysis. A group of scientists and students of the Politehnica University of Bucharest is involved in the advanced development of information technology at CERN. Prestigious scientific Romanian institutions such as the Institute of Spacial Sciences and the University of Bucharest also contribute to fundamental physics experiments at CERN. Besides, CERN is a fusion and initiation center for the collaboration between the scientific Romanian community and the community from abroad.
