EXOTIC NUCLEI AND NUCLEAR/PARTICLE ASTROPHYSICS (V). FROM NUCLEI TO STARS: Carpathian Summer School of Physics 2014

Publication date: February 2015 , ISBN: 9780735412842
Editors: Livius Trache , Daniela Chesneanu and Calin Alexandru Ur
The jubilee of the Carpathian schools in nuclear physics was celebrated with this 5th edition in the latest series, titled "Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear/Particle Astrophysics (V). From Nuclei to Stars" [previous summer schools were held in Mamaia (2005) and Sinaia (2007, 2010 and 2012)]. The two-week session had a mixed school-conference format and gathered over 100 students and lecturers well-versed in subjects ranging from nuclear physics to nuclear astrophysics and astroparticle physics. The scope of phenomena dealt with was phenomenal: from the minute energies of individual nuclear reactions in stars to the gigantic energy releases in supernovae, and from sub-nucleonic sizes to the size of the whole Universe!

Apolodor Raduta

Apolodor Raduta: NUCLEAR STRUCTURE WITH COHERENT STATES , Book: Springer, 2015 edition, 521 pages

This book covers the essential features of a large variety of nuclear structure properties, both collective and microscopic in nature. Most of results are given in an analytical form thus giving deep insight into the relevant phenomena. Using coherent states as variational states, which allows a description in the classical phase space, or provides the generating function for a boson basis, is an efficient tool to account, in a realistic fashion, for many complex properties. A detailed comparison with all existing nuclear structure models provides readers with a proper framework and, at the same time, demonstrates the prospects for new developments. The topics addressed are very much of current concern in the field. The book will appeal to practicing researchers and, due to its self-contained account, can also be successfully read and used by new graduate students.

Ionicioiu

R.Ionicioiu et al., Nature Communications 5:4997 (2014)

Quantum mechanics is notoriously counterintuitive - how can a photon be in two places at the same time? How can a particle (localized) be also a wave (delocalized)? These kind of questions made Feynman to state: "Nobody understands quantum mechanics". In a recent Gedankenexperiment [1] we analyse if classical intuitions (objectivity, determinism and locality) can be reconciled with quantum experiments. We show that any two of the previous conditions are compatible with experiments. The conflict becomes manifest when all three conditions are imposed and persists for any non-zero value of entanglement. We propose an experiment to test our conclusions.

Nobel Prize 2013

Researchers from IFIN-HH are proud to be part of the ATLAS experiment that lead to this year Nobel prize

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded jointly to François Englert and Peter W. Higgs "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider"
